I want to be a man who handles small invasions with calm, measured wisdom. Instead, I stood there in my boxers with a mug of Café Bustelo going cold in my hand, watching this thin dark thread of ants cross my threshold, and felt something in my chest go fully feral. They weren’t even hiding it. They walked right past me like I was the intruder.

The Urge to Go to War

My first move — and I want to be honest, because that’s the whole point of this — I texted Kevin — a friend with historically terrible judgment and zero interest in talking me out of anything — a single word: War. He wrote back in under a minute with the name of an ant spray he swore he’d used to, quote, “erase an entire civilization off my porch in one afternoon,” and by the time I’d finished my coffee we had fully convinced each other this was a job for the industrial stuff sitting in my shed from a Tractor Supply run two summers ago.

Here’s where it gets embarrassing. I got the can out. I stood over the trail like I was about to do something biblical. Equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar, the sugar pulls them in, the baking soda does something ugly to their insides once they eat it. Slow. Quiet. The kind of fix that doesn’t feel like a fix at all while it’s happening, which, if you know me, should have been my first warning that I was going to hate this.

Attempt One: The Monument to Failure

Let me tell you about the first batch, because I did not read the instructions so much as vibe my way through them. I used regular sugar because that’s what was in the cabinet. I dumped the whole mixture into one dramatic pile in the middle of the trail, the way you’d serve something at a party you were proud of. I have never once in my life needed a recipe to be right on the first try, and I saw no reason insects should be the ones to change that about me.

The ants ignored it completely. Not cautiously — completely. They rerouted around my pile like it was a checkpoint they’d already cleared with management. It’s fine that I am currently losing a war I started for sport against an enemy that does not know a war is happening. I said all of that out loud to the dog, who supervised the whole thing from the porch with the specific judgment only a boxer mix can deliver, and then I went inside and looked it up properly instead of guessing again.

Attempt Two: Following Actual Directions

Turns out the sugar has to be powdered — the fine texture is what lets it blend all the way through the baking soda instead of just sitting on top of it where the ants can eat around it, which, in hindsight, is exactly what mine had let them do. Turns out you don’t dump it in one glorious mound. You scatter it thin, right along the actual trail, right at the cracks and edges where they’re actually coming and going, because a big pile is just a monument to your effort and not an actual trap.

So, I mixed it again. Correctly, this time, with the powdered sugar I keep around for the lemon bars I make when I actually feel like proving I’m more than just a guy with a shovel. I laid it out thin along the line, right at the seam where the step meets the dirt, and I went back inside feeling, honestly, a little smug about it. I want that on the record. I felt like a man who had solved something.

The Six-Day Staring Contest

Day one, nothing happened. I checked at seven, at nine, at noon, at four, like I was running surveillance on a house I suspected of something. The trail was exactly as busy as it had been the day before. My stomach did that thing where it starts grinding a little, low and steady, like I’d swallowed something with edges.

By day two I was ready to call the whole method a myth invented by people with more patience than sense. Six to ten days, is what I found, sometimes longer depending on the species, and during that entire stretch it looks like absolutely nothing is happening, which is exactly when most people — me, very specifically me — decide it isn’t working and go back to the spray can out of pure wounded pride.

I didn’t touch it. That’s the whole secret, and it’s a deeply unsatisfying one. I kept the bait dry, didn’t hose down the step, didn’t sweep around it even when it was driving me insane to leave a little scatter of white powder on my own porch like some kind of amateur. I refreshed it every few days instead of every few hours. And I stopped checking on it every hour like it owed me an update.

By day five the trail had thinned out enough that I noticed before I remembered to look for it — half the ants I used to see were just gone, no ceremony, no announcement, the way most real progress happens when you’re not staring directly at it. By day seven there was almost nothing crossing that step at all, and the ones still around seemed to have lost interest in whatever used to be worth the trip.

I’m not going to stand here and tell you this fixes everything every time, because it doesn’t. Some ants — the bigger carpenter ones especially — don’t care about sugar and won’t touch it, and if you’re ten days in with zero movement, that’s not a patience problem anymore, that’s a different problem, and at that point you get the stronger stuff or you call somebody who does this for a living. Knowing the difference between staying patient and just refusing to admit something isn’t working is its own separate skill, and I am, admittedly, still practicing it.

But this particular fight, on this particular step, I won. Not because the bait was some miracle. Because I was more stubborn than they were patient, and it turns out that’s usually the only edge you actually need.

Outlasting the Enemy

The thing about the ants is they never left because I scared them off. They left because I outlasted them at something I was convinced, for the first two days, I’d already lost.

It’s fine that a bird somewhere in the mesquite had apparently filed a noise complaint and was screaming about it nonstop while the neighbor’s dog decided a squirrel had personally insulted his entire bloodline. Somebody yelled from inside the house, “Are you watering again?” I yelled back, “APPARENTLY,” which felt like a completely reasonable answer to give at seven in the morning while holding a hose I shouldn’t have needed.

It wasn’t fine. Nothing about hand-watering a bed next to a functioning-but-broken sprinkler is fine. It’s just what happens when dealing with something small starts to feel like more effort than living around it forever. And yet — full geyser chaos, a screaming bird, a dog with a vendetta, a grown man yelling “APPARENTLY” at his own house — I want it noted that I did not, for one second, lose command of the situation. Some men fall apart under pressure. I just take inventory and start delegating tasks to myself.

So, I put the hose down. I want that on the record — I put it down mid-lap, which for me is basically a personality transplant, because I overthink everything. I once spent forty-five minutes deciding whether a plant looked “stressed” or “dying,” two diagnoses that apparently require very different levels of panic. But this — this I just did.

I am the kind of man you can drop into any situation — a busted system, a strange kitchen, somebody else’s collapsing afternoon — and I will figure it out faster than the manual could ever explain it to me, because I have never once read an instruction booklet cover to cover and I was not about to start over a sprinkler head. I diagnosed this entire irrigation catastrophe from twenty feet away, mid-stride, still holding a hose I no longer needed, and frankly whatever aquifer is sitting two hundred feet under this property is having a very good day right now. I’m not saying it owes me anything. I’m saying it should probably send a card. There’s nobody within three miles to argue with me about it either way.

Here’s the whole receipt: eight dollars for the part. No emergency hardware store run. No three-hour rabbit hole convincing myself I needed some specialized tool forged by monks on a mountain who only work in irrigation fittings. Eight dollars. Six minutes. That’s it.

Compare that to the last time I “fixed” a sprinkler, years ago, when I decided the leak just needed tightening and kept turning the fitting until I cracked it clean off underground. I did, however, send a follow-up text he hadn’t asked for, informing him that this repair had probably saved the household somewhere around four hundred dollars in water waste this year alone — a number I invented on the spot and delivered with the total confidence of a man reading off a receipt, aimed straight at the one person I know who’d actually care about that stat. He left me on read. I chose to interpret the silence as awe.

Because my body, meanwhile, had opinions about this victory lap that no amount of confidence could talk it out of. My knee reminded me, loudly, that I have not been twenty-five in some time. My lower back negotiated a brief but serious peace treaty after however long I’d spent crouched over that fitting. My hands stayed muddy longer than usual. But my shoulders — the ones that had been up around my ears for three weeks over a problem I’d stopped admitting was a problem — those felt lighter than they had in a while.

I was supposed to be writing this morning. Or answering emails or dealing with the laundry that’s been sitting in the dryer for two days running its own version of the reclassification trick. If I’m honest, that list has maybe fifteen small things on it right now, all quietly promoted to Future Mitch’s Problem, all waiting their turn. Future Mitch deserves a union rep at this point. But none of the fifteen mattered right then, because the water was landing exactly where it was supposed to land — no drama, no geyser, just quiet, boring, correct water pressure hitting dry dirt that had been waiting three weeks for it.

I’ve spent enough years staring at problems that don’t come with a replacement part. Anxiety doesn’t have a threaded connection you can hand-tighten. Depression doesn’t sell an eight-dollar fix at Tractor Supply. Money, health, grief — none of it screws on clean in six minutes no matter how good you get with your hands. Problems like that, the ones with no fitting to unscrew and no part to swap, teach your brain something dangerous over time: if you can’t fix everything, why bother fixing anything.

That’s the lie sitting underneath three weeks of hauling a hose past a working solution. The sprinkler head was small and stupid and completely within my power and fixing it in six minutes wasn’t really about the sprinkler. It was proof that my brain had been lying to me about what “nothing changes” actually means.

One sprinkler head. One flower bed getting watered correctly for the first time in three weeks. One eight-dollar promise kept to myself when I could’ve kept walking past it for another month. Some days that’s the whole win, and I’m learning to let it count as one instead of waiting for a bigger victory to show up and validate the smaller one.

The problems with a replacement part were never the ones lying to me. It’s the ones with no threaded connection that convince you nothing’s fixable — and sometimes you fix the small one just to catch the big one in the lie.

Here’s what I know after years of watching myself do this: the fifteen things on your Future You list aren’t all getting fixed today, and that’s fine. The Quiet Before the Flatline

There’s a specific kind of quiet that happens right before a machine starts screaming. A held-breath quiet. I got very familiar with that quiet, because I spent two years on the wrong side of it — machines beeping, fluorescent lights that don’t know what time it is and don’t care, a version of time that stopped being made of hours and started being made of just more of the same, stacked up like firewood nobody asked for.

My organs quit. Not one at a time politely. All of them, in sequence, like someone walking down a hallway flipping light switches off room by room, unhurried, like they had nowhere to be after.

Say that number out loud. Seven. I have at two in the morning, more times than I’m proud of, usually right after I’ve convinced myself I’m fine and definitely not thinking about it. Seven is a lot of times to almost not exist anymore. It’s also, and I will die on this hill, an extremely dramatic number for a guy who can’t currently keep a basil plant alive.

Dr. BBM and the Six-Month Coma

Here’s where it gets embarrassing.

There was a doctor. I’m not naming him, on the advice of people who understand libel law better than I do, so we’re calling him Dr. BBM. Bad Bedside Manner. Feel free to speculate about the other thing it could stand for — I’m not confirming and I’m not denying, I’m just going to let that sit there and season the story a little.

Dr. BBM had the face of a man who was already three patients down the hall before he’d finished the sentence he was standing in. He came in, looked at me — mid-organ-failure, several flatlines deep — and said, and I have this memorized word for word because I’ve replayed it roughly ten thousand times since:

That’s it. That was the whole professional opinion. Go home. Hope. Best of luck out there.

I would like to formally thank Dr. BBM for that, because nothing lights a fire under a stubborn man’s will to live quite like being told by a stranger with a clipboard that he’s already written the ending. I didn’t agree to that ending. Nobody asked me. I have never once in my life let someone else finish my sentence for me, and I certainly wasn’t about to let a man who couldn’t be bothered to remember my name write my last chapter.

Then I went into a coma for six months, so — joke’s on me a little, technically he did get the last word for a while.

And through all of it, one voice kept cutting through clean as a bell.

Dr. BBM. Go home and hope for the best.

Not because he was still there. I have no idea if he ever checked on me again. But those six words had a clarity nothing else in that fog could touch, and something in me — low, mean, completely unimpressed — kept answering back.

I woke up. And waking up wasn’t the finish line I thought it was — it was closer to a start line for a race I had no idea I’d signed up for.

Actual physical therapy, actual parallel bars, actual toddler-level effort just to get from one end of a room to the other without falling over, at a body that used to run six miles before breakfast just because it felt like it. I had to relearn how to eat solid food, which sounds like a joke until you’re the one doing it, gagging on a piece of toast like it personally insulted you. If you don’t use it, you lose it, and I hadn’t used any of it for two years, so I lost all of it, and got to build it back one humiliating inch at a time.

The Tuesday After Surviving

They finally discharged me. I remember the day specifically because it was a Tuesday, and I remember thinking: it’s Tuesday, and nothing is scheduled, and no one is coming to check my vitals, and I have absolutely no idea what a day is supposed to look like when it isn’t organized entirely around not dying.

The Gas Station From the Future

Here’s where it gets weird. My ride dropped me off, I still don’t fully trust my legs yet, and I stop at a gas station on the way home because two years in a bed will make a man desperate for a bag of chips he didn’t earn. And the whole place has changed. Not renovated — changed, like the world quietly redecorated itself while I wasn’t looking and forgot to leave a note. The card reader wants me to tap instead of swipe, and I’m standing there like an idiot holding my card six inches from a machine that’s judging me. The bathroom sink turns on by itself when I put my hands under it, which nearly gave me a second cardiac event right there in a gas station bathroom, which would’ve been a genuinely embarrassing way to go after everything I’d survived. The soap dispenses itself. The toilet flushes itself. I stood in that bathroom for a solid minute just feeling like a caveman who’d wandered into the future, deeply unsettled by a world that had kept moving without so much as checking in on me.

Fighting to stay alive and knowing how to just be alive are two completely different skill sets, and I only had one of them, and it was suddenly, uselessly, unemployed.

I got home. The coffee maker went off like nothing had happened. There was a coat on a hook I didn’t remember owning. Mail on the counter addressed to a version of me that had apparently kept paying bills this whole time, which, respect. My house had just continued without me — politely, patiently — and it was now standing there waiting for me to explain myself.

I did not have an explanation. I still don’t, most days, if I’m honest, which — again — is the whole exercise here.

Two years flat on your back does something else, too, that nobody mentions. It takes your social skills and quietly disassembles them while you’re not looking, same as it did your legs. I came out of that hospital an objectively worse conversationalist than I went in — slower on small talk, bad at eye contact, prone to saying the wrong thing at the wrong volume in a checkout line. Fifteen years later and I’m still a little bit that guy. The guy who reads a room about four seconds too late. I’ve made my peace with it, mostly because making peace with things is easier than getting good at them.

I tried going back to my old routine like nothing had happened. Lasted three weeks. I tried staying busy enough that the quiet couldn’t catch me, which worked right up until two a.m. on some random Wednesday when the busyness ran out and the quiet was just sitting there, arms crossed, like it had been waiting the whole time and wasn’t even mad, just disappointed. I tried talking about it with someone who made it weird within four sentences. I tried not talking about it at all, which was worse. I’m still working on the talking part. Case in point: this entire blog.

The Tomato Seed and the Dandelion

I ended up in the side yard, which — let’s be clear — was not a decision. Decisions require intention and a plan, and I had neither. I just sort of arrived there one morning with cold coffee in my hand, looking at a patch of ground nobody had touched in years. Cracked dirt. Weeds gone tall and woody, past the point of even being weeds anymore, more like small, defeated trees that had given up on the whole enterprise but were too stubborn to fall over.

I got down on my knees, still a little unsteady, and pulled a weed. It came out clean, roots and all, that specific satisfying pop of something finally letting go of a fight it had already lost. So, I pulled another one. Then another. My hands got filthy. My knees got filthy. Coffee stone cold on the ground beside me, completely abandoned, and I did not care even slightly, which if you knew me before this is a genuinely shocking sentence.

And that’s when I found a seed packet in my jacket pocket.

I don’t have an explanation for this either. Gas station rack, hardware store impulse buys, the universe deciding to be funny at exactly the right moment — I truly don’t know. Tomato seeds. Of course it was tomatoes. I love tomatoes with the specific unearned devotion most men reserve for a football team that’s never once won anything, so, fine. Apparently, I’m a man who carries tomato seeds around in his jacket now. We’re doing this. And we’re doing it completely unqualified, because I had done zero research, made zero plans, and the soil was, by any reasonable standard, garbage.

That was the whole thought. It wasn’t profound. It didn’t come with music. It just quietly became the most okay I’d felt since coming home, and I decided, right there, with dirt under my nails and absolutely no evidence to support it, that I had personally invented hope. Nobody has successfully talked me out of that since, and I don’t expect that to change.

That was fifteen years ago. I’m still working on the talking part, the social-skills part, the trusting-that-good-things-stick-around part. Turns out you don’t graduate from any of that. You just get better dirt under your nails while you keep going.

Here’s what I actually know, after all of it. Surviving and living are not the same skill. Nobody tells you that on your way out the hospital doors — that the fighting-to-stay-alive part was, in hindsight, the easy part, and the hard part is what you do with the time you fought so hard to keep. The hard part is the Tuesday. The automatic sink. The coat you don’t remember. The yard full of dead weeds that somehow still has one stubborn dandelion in it, not asking anybody’s permission to exist.

You don’t have to know if it’s going to grow. You just have to put it in the ground.

I’ve been sitting out here for twenty minutes trying to write a caption for a photo of a fence post, and instead I keep rearranging the mugs like that’s the actual job. Empty one on the left. Half-full one in the middle. Full one on the right, going cold because I keep talking myself out of drinking it. What do you actually get when signing up. I realized I’ve never once said it plainly. I just kept assuming the shape would explain itself eventually.

It didn’t. So here it is, once, out loud, no charge, because right now none of this costs you anything and I’d like to keep it that way as long as I can.

Every month you get three things from me, and they’re not the same thing three times.

You don’t come here to be told you’re doing great. You come here because something in your yard, or your head, or both, has been quietly falling apart for a while and you’re tired of calling it fine. That’s the actual offer. Everything else is just how I hand it to you.

The garden doesn’t lie to you about how bad the neglect got. Neither will I.
